My quest for the most amazing nachos in Canton didn?t end with Speakeasy or Pickled Parrot.
This time, I headed to Nacho Mama?s on O?Donnell Street. With a name like that, I?d been drooling for days imagining the gorgeousness of a place filled with cheese and chips.
Inside, the bar is packed with scruffy, smoking, Natty Boh-swilling Baltimoreans. There is also your requisite young professional bunch, sitting in the booths sharing huge servings of chips and salsa. Mama?s is also a stocked shrine to cultural icons like Natty Boh and Elvis, so don?t be surprised by the decor.
First stop: a margarita.
These not-too-sweet margaritas come in tall pint glasses and are the color of summer. Consider ordering a Hubcap margarita, which is an actual hubcap filled with the happy elixir for about $14. Nacho Mama?s bartender Anna recommends sharing this huge drink with at least three other people.
Next stop: crab nachos.
These are good. The cheese and crab turn into a delicious and gooey topping, which is thenslathered on and in between plenty of crisp tortilla flats. Don?t hold your breath for too many veggies on these, though. The majority of the appetizer is filled with meat and cheese.
Do not pass by the quesadillas. These things are huge. Mine was filled with shrimp, black beans, feta and diced tomatoes, which was flavorful, but unfortunately overpowered by the somewhat-charred tortilla. Grab a doggie bag for the rest, because for the price of one, you?ll be eating at least for three days.
My date?s deep-fried beef chimichanga was also massive and arrived plated with sour cream.
For those who enjoy deciphering flavors or seeing ingredients, Nacho Mama?s is not for you. Everything comes heaped together, mixed, melted and with a Mexican flare. Needless to say, our meal was delicious and taken home for later.
