THE 3-MINUTE INTERVIEW: Michael Halmon

Halmon, a Waldorf resident, won $200,000 in the Maryland Lottery’s Powerball game. Though he bought the winning ticket on May 27, he didn’t believe that he could have possibly won and didn’t check until last week. Halmon, a UPS driver for 17 years, is a father of six. How often do you play the lottery?

I do Pick Four’s evening number every day. I do the Multi Match, which comes out on Mondays and Thursdays, and I do the Powerball on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and then I do the Mega Millions that comes out on Tuesdays and Fridays.

Did you ever expect to win?

No. I purchased a random ticket. I came back two or three days later and the owner of the store, he assumed that he sold me the [winning] ticket. I had explained to him, “Truly, I’m not the one you sold a ticket to.”

This Saturday just past, I came upon this number and it said “Cash lotto.” The attendant put in all the numbers, and he said, “Man, you won $200,000.'” I said, “You gotta be kidding me.” My mom was on the phone and she overheard the guy say that I won $200,000. She started crying. I was like, “What are you crying for? You didn’t win anything! You’re making me all emotional.”

What are you going to do with the money?

I’ll pay all my bills off, and then I’m going to start the New Year off with a clean slate. I’m going to help my daughter pay for college. I’m going to give to Toys for Tots, because I do that every year. This year I’ll be able to give a little bit more to them. Then Christmas is going to be a good Christmas for my family.

Are you going to keep playing the lottery?

As a matter of fact, I just went and played like $20 worth of numbers.
