After telling ABC News that there’s a “big Trump” and a “little Trump,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said Sunday that a split personality should not disqualify Donald Trump from becoming commander in chief.
“Of course you can,” Gingrich told “Fox News Sunday” host Chris Wallace when asked if Americans could afford to have a president who behaves drastically different depending on the day.
“I think we had a number of presidents who had interesting challenges in their personality,” he added.
Gingrich, a top supporter of the Republican presidential nominee, said last week that “the big Trump is a historic figure” whose campaign message has made “the establishment very uncomfortable” and the “little Trump” is seen when the candidate makes comments that causes a headache for his campaign.
“The big Trump beat 16 other people for the nomination. The big Trump is creating issues that make the establishment very uncomfortable,” he told ABC News. “The little Trump frankly gets out — is stupid… and I don’t defend him when he wanders off, I’ve told him over and over.”
Gingrich also described “little Trump” as “frankly pathetic” after the GOP nominee reignited his feud with House Speaker Paul Ryan earlier this month.
“Trump is not perfect, but [Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton] sure ain’t perfect either and she’s a much greater threat to our system than Donald Trump is,” he told Fox Business.
