‘Me First’ attitude is rampant in Washington

Re: “Post finally discovers handicapped parking problem,” Sept. 27

I would like to thank The Examiner for its frank and open discussion about the abuse of handicapped parking tags. I have been a wheelchair user for over a decade, and this issue has been a problem for me ever since day one.

We have all seen manners diminish across this country for years, but I would argue that this “Me First” attitude runs even deeper in metropolitan areas such as D.C. Society and the government state that they want people with disabilities to have the same opportunities as everyone else, but then they don’t enforce regulation of the very things that make it possible for us to be included.

I believe that the next civil rights effort will be led by people with disabilities.

Obama believes in public education — for everybody else

Re: “Obama: D.C. public schools not good enough for his daughters,” Sept. 26

Since President Obama wants to level out society by redistributing our money, it’s surprising that his own kids are attending an exclusive private school like Sidwell Friends. It’s also surprising that some of the money the president has reshuffled has not found its way to fund school vouchers. After all, what’s more leveling than giving poor children the same quality education their wealthy peers receive?

The president beats his chest talking about the importance of a public education — just not for his kids. Soon after arriving in town, Obama and his fellow Democrats killed the District’s popular school voucher program, the better to keep the poor unwashed in their place while their children are sent off to private schools.

Long ago, Democrat Bull Connor stood at the schoolhouse door to prevent the races from mixing in the classroom. Obama and his party are at that same door today.

Bush can’t be blamed for Obama’s policies

Re: “It will take years to fix GOP’s recession mess,” from readers, Sept. 26

This letter left me nearly speechless. I find it very hard to believe that someone has the gall to blame former President Bush for the economic mess this country is in.

Did Bush leave us with a trillion-dollar deficit? Yes he did, but he has not been in office for the last year and a half. He was not the one who gave us the stimulus package or an insanely expensive health care plan.

People who still blame Bush need to wake up to what President Obama is doing in the White House since he left.
