Metro trestles will complement Dulles landscape Re:LaHood backs aboveground Dulles Metro station to save money,” June 30

U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood views an aboveground Metro station as economically prudent — in contrast to the nonsense of an overzealous airports authority that insists on preserving the famed “architectural heritage” of Washington Dulles International Airport.

Shove the planned parking garages underground and allow the natural ambiance of an overhead Metro trestle to complement the airport’s fixtures instead of the ugly scene of a hodgepodge of parked private vehicles ruling the outdoors. Allow the cultural habit of driving to the airport to evaporate in favor of attractive, weather-impervious train trestles that permeate the landscape.

In fact, instead of shoving them into a crypt so as not to interfere with the easy mobility of the private auto, we should emulate the European and Japanese custom of rural aboveground trains — except in urban and downtown areas, where these guys belong underground.

Planned Parenthood should not get any subsidies

Re: “Bright light of the week: Gov. Chris Christie, R-N.J.” July 3

New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was recognized by The Examiner for vetoing a $7.5 million Planned Parenthood subsidy passed by the Democrat legislature even though PP is killing the preborn without concern for women’s safety.

The Food and Drug Administration has issued guidelines for using the dangerous drug RU-486 to perform medical abortions because women have died, many have become gravely ill, and most have some bad side effects after taking it. Yet PP’s website in Bronx, N.Y., which instructs women on the protocol for medical abortion, blatantly disregards those safety guidelines. PP of Ohio tried to overturn a law requiring the FDA guidelines and lost, but that has not stopped PP of Arizona from trying to overturn a similar law.

Democrats cry “women’s choice” to promote abortion. They care nothing about women, but only about the profits of PP, their political benefactor.

New York DA blew it before international audience

Re: “New York DA suffers new setback with Strauss-Kahn,” July 3

The district attorney for New York should not only be mortified but ashamed for trying Dominique Strauss-Kahn, the former head of the International Monetary Fund, in the media under the assumption that he was guilty, contrary to our laws, which state that an individual is innocent until convicted in a court of law.

Within a few days of the alleged rape, the credibility of the “victim” was in question with a record of violations of the law governing entry into the U.S. and possible money laundering and drug dealing.

We pride ourselves on a legal system that considers the accused to be innocent until proven guilty. In this case, however, we blew it in front of an international audience.
