More than 2.17 million passengers flew into and out of Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport in July, setting a new record for the busiest month in the airport’s history.

Traffic moving through the airport was up 4.5 percent from July 2009 and shattered the previous record set in August 2001.

Southwest Airlines serviced more than half of BWI’s July passengers, or roughly 1.17 million fliers.

Passenger traffic has increased at BWI during 13 of the past 14 months, according to airport officials.  The exception was February, when major snow storms disrupted many airline flight schedules.
