VERMILLION, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota pole vaulter Derek Miles has failed to qualify for the finals at the Olympics.

Miles competed in the preliminaries in London on Wednesday but did not advance to Friday’s finals. He has been hampered in recent months by an Achilles injury that affected his training.

The Summer Games are the third Olympics for Miles, an assistant track and field coach for the University of South Dakota. He finished seventh in Athens, Greece, in 2004, and fourth in Beijing, China, four years ago.
