MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — Nassau County has closed 18 beaches because of the threat of high bacteria levels from heavy rains.

Nassau health officials closed 14 North shore beaches and four South Shore beaches to bathing on Wednesday.

They said storm runoff can cause bacterial to spike to unhealthy levels.

Parts of Long Island got more than 12 inches of rain Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.
