McCain’s Dance of the Drill

Well, it’s a sufficiently rare occasion on which McCain moves to the right on an issue, that I’m inclined to smile warmly upon his flip-flop on off-shore drilling. Make it a state-determined issue, not a federal moratorium. Sounds more conservative than John usually does.

Of course, he’s not budging on ANWR, which as Charles Krauthammer pointed out on Brit Hume’s show, would do him some serious favors with conservatives while angering only environmentalists who won’t vote for him anyway.

I’m wondering what you guys think. With gas prices being such a huge deal, and polling showing even many liberals are in favor of drilling at home, do you think McCain’s move will earn him any votes? Presumably Obama won’t move on this issue, and McCain could gain a bit by staying slightly right.

Of course, Obama’s energy policy could end up being as incoherent as his foreign policy, and he could change his mind about drilling in October.

Update: Ahhh, Instapundit reads my mind by offering this link: 7 Ways McCain Can Use Energy to Beat Obama. Of course, this list requires McCain being a bit less hip on global warming and a bit less stubborn on ANWR. Don’t get your hopes up.
