What’s next for Rick Perry

Dan Balz gets a preview into what’s next for Rick Perry from chief campaign strategist Dave Carney. Here are some of the more interesting nuggets.

1) Debates don’t matter

Carney dismisses Perry’s lackluster debate performances although he admits the media narrative is “unhelpful.” Last week’s Washington Post/Bloomberg debate was “passable” and the sinking polls that followed are “Polaroids.”

2) Major speeches

Perry is lining up more major speeches to flesh out his policy proposals. Upcoming speeches include border security, foreign policy, and government reform.

3) Less attacks

Carney believes that the campaign will run more ads promoting Rick Perry, rather than more attack ads against Romney. The idea is that once more voters understand more about Perry, they will react positively.

The bottom line is that Rick Perry raised $17 million so far and has a mandate to compete with Romney. Don’t look for Perry to compete in tomorrow’s debate, however, it is clear that the the campaign is moving beyond them.
