Through May 23: The Keegan Theatre presents ‘The Graduate,’ through May 23
“Plastics.” Never has the future been so succinctly put. The Keegan Theatre presents this classic story of seduction and coming of age. “The Graduate” proves concepts like “cougar” and youthful disillusionment certainly are not new. Through Sunday: GI Film Festival
The GI Film Festival wraps up Sunday. The GIFF is a nonprofit organization and filmfest that focuses on the American military. This year’s event includes 35 films, including Glenn Close’s directorial debut, “Pax,” and the premier of the new Army reality show “Starting Strong.” The main venue is the Carnegie Institution of Science (1530 P St. NW). Great location: The Carnegie Institution of Science is located smack dab between Dupont and Logan circles. Grab a grilled cheese and a draft about a block away at Stoney’s on P Street.
Saturday: Yoga on the Mall
Namaste this, tourists. In conjunction with the fifth anniversary of DC Yoga Week, check out this mass yoga happening on the nation’s front lawn. The free event takes place from 1 to 5 p.m. at the southwest corner of 15th Street and Constitution Avenue near the Washington Monument. Bring a mat or blanket, and a snack, and find serenity among the tour buses.
Take advantage of the week: DC Yoga Week runs through May 22 and features a number of participating studios offering discounts. If you’ve never tried it, give yoga a shot. Beginners are almost always welcome. For more information, visit dcyogaweek.com.
Saturday: Virginia Coalition at the Birchmere
You know it’s summertime when the high-energy sounds of locals Virginia Coalition hit the stage. The band plays at the Birchmere, a great music hall in Alexandria. Openers include two fine D.C.-area singer-songwriters: Justin Jones and Taylor Carson. Show is at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $20. For more info, visit birchmere.com.
Eat there: The Birchmere offers a menu of munchies and sandwiches. Make it a night of it while catching the opening acts.
Sunday: Taste of Arlington
This annual culinary event in the Arlington neighborhood of Ballston is back again. More than 40 restaurants are expected to participate, taking place out in front of the Ballston Common Mall. Entrance to the event is free, including entertainment. Books of eight tasting tickets cost $20 in advance, $25 day of. Tasting tickets get you samples of many different food options. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Virginia Hospital Center and the Arlington Community Foundation. Noon to 5 p.m. For more info, visit tasteofarlington.com.
