G.W. wants to build museum on campus

The George Washington University wants to build a new museum in between two buildings and on what is currently a rose garden connecting 21st Street to the campus quad. The GW Museum would feature the Albert H. Small Washingtoniana Collection as well as provide a new home for The Textile Museum now located in two historic buildings on S Street in Kalorama.

After a zoning hearing last week, a university official said she anticipated the project would get preliminary approval by the commission at its next hearing scheduled for May 14. In the meantime, the second-largest land owner in the District is addressing some technical issues regarding the loading zones on 21st and G streets.

The museum would connect the historic Woodhull House on 21st and G streets to Corcoran Hall on 21st. The university police department, now housed in the historic house, would be moved. The house would be rennovated as part of the project and a second-story covered walkway would connect the home with the modern part of the museum.

The project is also subject to approval the National Capital Planning Commission before returning to the Zoning Commission for a second and final confirmation vote (likely this summer). Pending final approval, construction will begin later this year with an estimated completion date of late 2014.
