Oil could reach Va. coast within weeks

A computer modeling study released Thursday by the University Corp. for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, Colo., shows that the BP oil spill could reach the East Coast in a matter of weeks.

As The Washington Examiner reported on Tuesday, the spill reaching the East Coast is a matter of when, not if, according to marine experts.

“It’s 100 percent certain that something will make it into the Gulf Stream and up to the Carolinas,” said Peter Ortner, a University of Miami professor and director of the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Studies, a National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration-funded institute

“There’s nothing to stop that. It’s only a question of when,” Ortner said.

Ortner said the oil would flow roughly 80 miles a day, and it could reach the water off Norfolk in the next month.

Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay are likely safe, however.
