House Majority Whip Steve Scalise has been released from a Washington hospital following a “successful” surgery.
The Louisiana Republican was discharged from MedStar Washington Hospital Center on Saturday and “the planned surgery was successful,” according to a statement from the hospital.
Scalise, who suffered a gunshot wound last summer during congressional baseball practice in Alexandria, Va., “will be recovering at home for the next several days,” the statement added.
Scalise announced Monday that he had another surgery Monday as part of his rehabilitation from his injuries after the shooting.
“Congressman Steve Scalise has initiated a series of planned, inpatient procedures related to his ongoing recovery from injuries sustained in last summer’s shooting attack,” MedStar Washington Hospital Center said in a statement. “He is in excellent spirits and is eager to return to work as soon as possible. It is anticipated that he will remain in the hospital for several days.”
Scalise has undergone a series of surgeries as he continues to recover from the shooting, with the most recent being in January.
Scalise returned to Capitol Hill last September after three months of rehabilitation. Recently he expressed interest in succeeding House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., who is no seeking re-election.
