A victory Wie all can enjoy

Hey, maybe it won’t require amphetamines to sustain interest in the FedEx Cup after all.

With his 67 in the final round of the Barclays, Tiger Woods assured himself a tee time next week at the Deutsche Bank Championship. The sound you heard Sunday afternoon was the sigh of relief from PGA headquarters in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

There also was celebration in Daytona Beach, home of LPGA headquarters, as former “It girl” Michelle Wie completed a wire-to-wire victory in the Canadian Women’s Open.

In winning for the second time in her professional career, Wie, 20, made a hole-in-one Friday and was in first place on 68 of 72 holes.

Wie won in the fashion that many had projected when she burst into golf at age 13, overpowering the course and the field with her extraordinary length. Wie played the four par-5 holes in 8-under par in her four rounds in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Her average of 290 yards a drive was 10 more than any other player in the field. It also was 13 more than the average posted this weekend by Barclays winner Matt Kuchar.

When she wobbled on No. 12 on Sunday, blasting a bunker shot through the green, she recovered with a chip to within inches to save bogey. Wie then took control, making birdies on back-to-back par-5s, then chipping-in for a birdie at No. 15 to take a four-shot lead.
