Poll: Clinton destroys Trump among young voters

Republicans would lose an alarming amount of young voters in a general election if party front-runner Donald Trump succeeds in becoming the GOP nominee, a new poll suggests.

According to a new USA Today/Rock the Vote survey of millennials, ages 18 to 34, Trump would suffer an embarrassing defeat across all demographics should he compete against Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton next November.

Overall, Clinton would carry a 33-point lead over the New York billionaire among young voters — 52 to 19 percent. Among young, minority voters, the former secretary of state’s lead is even greater.

Clinton would beat Trump 61-14 percent among Hispanic millennials, 60-11 percent among young, Asian-American voters, and 67-5 percent among African-Americans.

The same survey finds that one in four GOP voters under age 35 would defect to Clinton in a general election featuring the former first lady versus Trump.

Despite maintaining a solid lead over Trump among young voters, Clinton’s appeal among young voters continues to pale in comparison that of her Democratic opponent, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders.

The same survey shows that 20 percent of millennials would stay home on Election Day 2016 in the event of a Trump versus Clinton election, suggesting the two candidates’ combined unpopularity among young voters could drastically impact turnout.

The USA Today/Rock the Vote survey of 1,541 adults ages 18 to 34 was taken March 3-10. Results contain a margin of error plus or minus 4.6 percent.
