‘Intolerant student Left’ turning against their own

The Left has a habit of going against its so-called accepting and tolerant views to advocate for intolerant censorship. Peter Tatchell, who describes himself as “a lifelong civil rights campaigner,” points to a recent case from the “intolerant student Left” for the Telegraph.

The subheadline adds that “the race to be more Left-wing and politically correct than anyone else is resulting in an intimidating, excluding atmosphere on campuses.”

The piece is personal for Tatchell, as he was the one these Leftists have successfully censored. He was scheduled to speak at an LGBT event at Canterbury Christ Church on Monday night, where student leader, Fran Cowling, who is the LGBT+ Officer of the National Union of Students (NUS) was also speaking. Cowling refused to speak unless Tatchell was removed from the line-up.

Although Tatchell writing that he’s “supported every anti-racist and pro-transgender campaign during my 49 years of human rights work,” Cowling made claims that Tatchell is racist and transphobic in multiple e-mails. When he asked her for evidence, she would not provide it. This is because Tatchell claims, for instance when it comes to how Tatchell is racist, “the accusation is baseless.”

Tatchell is cordial to Cowling and NUS. He writes of how he has only gone public after wishing to keep it private because “she spurned all my attempts to resolve this matter amicably.” Tatchell even also wrote that “she has every right to do this,” after noting she was “refusing to share a platform with me.”

It is almost sad how cordial Tatchell is towards NUS, which he says he doesn’t see “as the enemy.” He still “support[s] their efforts to defend student rights and back their opposition to tuition fees and education cuts.” He also writes though that “I just disagree with the way some of them choose to deal with other people’s opinions.”

Tatchell also wrote:

This sorry, sad saga is symptomatic of the decline of free and open debate on some university campuses. There is a witch-hunting, accusatory atmosphere. Allegations are made without evidence to back them – or worse, they are made citing false, trumped-up evidence.
Disappointingly, Fran and the entire NUS leadership have turned down media requests to be interviewed and to debate the issues involved. This looks and feels cowardly. When challenged, they run, hide and denounce from the “safe space” of their laptops.

Just as the Left has grown dangerously intolerant here in the United States, it is a dangerous phenomenon overseas as well.
