Caps First Period Update

Caps 1, Maple Leafs 0

Alex Ovechkin scored goal No. 16 on a beautiful sequence of passes by Brooks Laich and Mike Green. That was an even strength goal at 17:11. Green now has  20 assists and 23 points – taking the NHL points lead among defensemen from Toronto’s Tomas Kaberle. Green has six assists in his last nine games.

Give credit to both goalies, though. There was some sloppy play by each team early in the first. Semyon Varlamov made a couple of nice stops with the Leafs buzzing in front of him. And Vesa Toskala had nine saves for Toronto, spoiling several good Washington chances himself. Easily could have been three or four goals in that period. Caps were 0-for-2 on the power play. The first one was horrendous. No juice at all. The second was a little better, but still limited chances.
