Capitals winger Chris Bourque was claimed off waivers by the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday. It was an ironic end in Washington for a player who finally made the Caps out of training camp – only to be placed on waivers a day later because the team was less than $77,500 over the NHL salary cap. It didn’t help that the Caps have yet to find a new spot for forward Michael Nylander and his $4.875 cap hit. The Caps have replaced Bourque on the fourth line with AHL callup Boyd Kane, who makes $500,000. That was the difference between giving a 23-year-old prospect who has produced at the AHL level (73 points last season) a chance and losing him for nothing. Kane is a 31-year-old journeyman who has played in 28 NHL games. Boudreau said Nylander will not play on Thursday against the Bruins.
