Top Five: Bowl games next week

The week after Christmas is a traditional time for overconsumption — food, drink and bowl games. This year, which are the best bowls before New Year’s Day? 5. Meineke Car Care Bowl (Texas A&M vs. Northwestern) » In the final start of his career, Wildcats quarterback Dan Persa plays in his long-awaited first bowl game Dec. 31. Northwestern hasn’t won a bowl game since 1949.

4. Military Bowl, (Air Force vs. Toledo) » After a year in which all three service academies made it to bowl games for the first time, Air Force is alone this year. This bowl on Dec. 28 has a nice theme and is played on real grass (or mud) and in the elements.

3. Champs Sports Bowl (Florida State vs. Notre Dame) ?»

Dec. 29 is a chance for these perennial underachievers to relive their classic 1993 game in which the No. 2 Irish toppled the No. 1 Seminoles and to dream of a future that resembles the past.

2. Insight Bowl (No. 19 Oklahoma vs. Iowa) » Few teams travel as well as Iowa, which explains how a 7-5 team gets a nice payout and a trip to Sun Devil Stadium. While the Hawkeyes are thrilled to be here on Dec. 30, Oklahoma (9-3) is not after being ranked No. 1 in the preseason. That often makes for an interesting bowl game.

1. Alamo Bowl (No. 15 Baylor vs. Washington) » Is Dec. 29 the last chance to see Heisman Trophy winning quarterback Robert Griffin III before he takes his talents to Jacksonville, Washington or Miami?
