Hokies wide receiver Danny Coale (Episcopal) is used to being in the middle of the Virginia-Virginia Tech rivalry — literally. He grew up in Lexington, 70 miles southwest of Charlottesville and 80 miles northeast of Blacksburg. “It’s an hour and 15 [minutes] both ways,” Coale said Monday night on Tech Talk Live. “I understood from an early age what this football game meant to people in Virginia.”
Coale has family history at a variety of Virginia colleges. His father, Jimmy, received his master’s degree from James Madison and is a professor and strength and conditioning coach at VMI. Coale’s brother, Kevin, played lacrosse at Virginia.
While ACC Championship game-bound Virginia Tech (9-2) and Virginia (4-7) are finishing on opposite notes, there still is reason for the Hokies to fear the Cavaliers on Saturday in Blacksburg.
“Any team that beats Miami, that’s a statement,” Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer said.
