WASHINGTON (AP) — U.S. Sen. John Cornyn has expressed his support for San Antonio Mayor Julian Castro to become the nation’s next housing secretary.

The Republican senator from Texas introduced Castro on Tuesday at the start of his confirmation hearing on Capitol Hill before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee.

The San Antonio Express-News reports (http://bit.ly/1smahXY ) Cornyn has said he expects little opposition to Castro’s nomination by President Barack Obama to become secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

Committee members Tuesday questioned Castro, a Democrat, on the future of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the role of the Federal Housing Administration and other matters.

The committee could vote on his nomination later this month.
