SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has joined local leaders to break ground on a long-awaited redevelopment project in Syracuse.

The Democrat participated in a ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Inner Harbor, a former industrial section of the city that’s connected to the Erie Canal system.

Syracuse officials have been looking for ways to turn the former Barge Canal terminal near Onondaga Lake’s eastern shore into a recreational, commercial and residential attraction for more than 20 years.

The Fayetteville-based COR Development Co. has been awarded the contract for the project, which includes a new hotel and apartment complex.
