Virginia rolls out bicycle policy

Virginia is giving bicyclers some tender loving care.

The state’s Department of Transportation released its 2011 State Bicycle Policy Plan this week. The plan is designed to encourage bicycle-friendly infrastructure by clarifying state policies, giving staff tools to include biking in local transportation plans and improve communication about biking.

Encouraging bicycling reduces pollution and traffic congestion, according to VDOT.

The plan is the first in a three-step process to develop Virginia’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program.
