STORYLINE

Thousands of protesters blocked Hong Kong’s main roads for the second night on Monday, demanding greater democracy.

In a shift of tactics, uniformed police manned barricades and looked on, preventing access to some buildings, but otherwise not intervening.

This comes after clashes on Sunday night, when Hong Kong police used pepper spray, batons, and tear gas to try to contain the protesters.

Police said they used 87 rounds of tear gas on Sunday in what they said was a necessary but restrained response to protesters’ efforts to push through cordons and barricades.

On Monday, the protesters looked well prepared in case of further use of tear gas by police, donning rain capes, surgical masks and goggles.
