Caps First Period Update

Caps 1, Islanders 1

Entertaining first period. Alex Ovechkin scored goal No. 14, tying the most he’s scored in one calendar month. Islanders responded with one from Kyle Okposo, who looks like a prize fighter doing his intermission interview with Islanders TV. Left eye swelling up pretty good. Didn’t see when he got hit. Ovechkin’s was a power-play goal at 4:41. Aucoin and Green on the assists. Okposo’s is one the Caps would like to have back. He skated unopposed into the slot all the way from center ice. No one stepped up to eliminate him from the play and Jose Theodore probably wishes he could have it back. Got a piece of it, but the puck deflected past him.

Only Caps penalty was on Shaone Morrisonn for tripping and – while New York had a couple nice chances there,- Washington killed it. Shots are 11-9 in favor of the Islanders. That Okposo-John Tavares-Matt Moulson line is young and dangerous. Tavares smacked one off the post and watched it deflect through the crease and out during his team’s power play. The 18-year-old is fun to watch. Caps will have to deal with that line all night.

Mike Green extended his consecutive point-scoring streak to 8. That’s the second longest in the NHL this year behind Tampa Bay’s Marty St. Louis (10). Aucoin continues to contribute. He looks like a guy with no intention of going back to Hershey.
