Roger Stone ‘proud’ of his efforts to get Trump elected despite ‘all that’s happened’

Roger Stone is still “proud” of his efforts to get President Trump elected even though he was recently sentenced to 40 months in prison for crimes uncovered through special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the Trump campaign and Russia.

Speaking with Axios on HBO in an interview that aired Sunday, the longtime associate of the president was asked about his work on behalf of Trump during the then-candidate’s 2016 campaign.

“One does not have to be on a campaign staff in order to effectuate the electoral outcome of an election in America given the modern miracle of social media and the ability to communicate,” he said. “I’m proud of my support for the president. I did as much as I possibly could on my own to get him elected.”

When asked if he feels the same way now “given all that’s happened,” Stone replied, “Yes, I do.”

However, the self-proclaimed “dirty trickster” stopped short of sharing any regrets on the matter, citing a court gag order. Among items he refused to comment on was whether or not he thinks Trump, who has publicly defended him, will bestow a presidential pardon upon him.

“I’m not going to discuss anything that pertains to this case, and that could be inferred to pertain to the case,” he said.

Stone was hit with a 40-month sentence after the Department of Justice scaled back its original recommendation of seven to nine years in prison for witness tampering and lying to Congress. He is currently free while his motion for a new trial, which he requested over a juror’s anti-Trump social media posts, is being considered.

In addition to telling Axios he’s proud of his efforts to help Trump win the White House, Stone also said he feels “pretty good” about his future “because I’ve taken Jesus Christ as my personal savior.”

“And it’s given me enormous strength and solace because he knows what’s in my heart,” he said.
