Lawrence Alexander is out with a new novel, “Rubicon” (HarperCollins), which focuses on an idealistic senator from California who discovers that an assassination is planned before a November election. “As events pile up before the predicted attack,” the book’s blurb says, “it becomes clear that Rubicon isn’t just about the election. It’s a plot to steal the country.”

I only watch news and some sports on television. Within those limitations, “The NewsHour” on PBS.
