Trump: Sessions doesn’t know what’s going on ‘underneath his command position’

President Trump attacked Attorney General Jeff Sessions in several tweets Saturday morning, accusing him of lacking an understanding of what is going on “underneath his command position,” which is causing “real corruption” to go untouched.

“Jeff Sessions said he wouldn’t allow politics to influence him only because he doesn’t understand what is happening underneath his command position. Highly conflicted Bob Mueller and his gang of 17 Angry Dems are having a field day as real corruption goes untouched. No Collusion!” Trump tweeted.

The president also quoted Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., his frequent golf partner, who told Fox News on Thursday night that while Sessions was correct for recusing himself from the investigation into Russian meddling, the country was not being “well served” by the fraught relationship between Trump and his attorney general.

“.@LindseyGrahamSC ‘Every President deserves an Attorney General they have confidence in. I believe every President has a right to their Cabinet, these are not lifetime appointments. You serve at the pleasure of the President,’” Trump said in his subsequent tweet.

Trump has fumed publicly for months about Sessions’ decision to recuse himself from the Russia probe, but the feud between the two escalated this week after the president accused Sessions in an interview with Fox News of never taking control of the Justice Department

Following the interview, Sessions issued a statement directly responding to Trump’s remarks, saying he “took control” of the agency the day he was sworn in.

“While I am attorney general, the actions of the Department of Justice will not be improperly influenced by political considerations,” Sessions said.

Following the exchange, some Senate Republicans began to openly discuss the possibility of having to replace the attorney general.

Republicans had in the past had warned against Trump firing Sessions.
