State port to award big construction contract

GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) — At $62.9 million, W.C. Fore Trucking Inc. of Gulfport is the low bidder on the biggest single construction project for state port restoration and expansion.

The Sun Herald reports (http://bit.ly/1u2PjfO ) the port’s board hopes to award the contract at a special meeting Monday. The board was unable to award the contract at its regular meeting Thursday because two commissioners had to abstain from voting over potential conflicts of interest.

Commissioner Bobby Knesal had a professional tie to one of the contractors, while a subcontractor sits on the board of the Gulf Coast Business Council, where commissioner Jack Norris is director.

The winning bidder will install base and pavement, utilities and rail line on the expanded West Pier. Work is expected to begin in mid-October and be completed in 18 months.
