Briljent founder Kathy Carrier tells The Journal Gazette (http://bit.ly/XEQFyH ) the company will lay off between 100 and 130 workers later this spring.
Carrier says her company grew too large to win renewal of a five-year contract with the Department of Health and Human Services to write scripts for common questions called into 1-800-Medicare and train the call center staff.
That contract started at $24.7 million a year and grew over time, but Carrier says it was designated only for small businesses.
She says she doesn’t regret outgrowing the program, adding that Briljent can’t continue to rely on contracts set aside for small businesses if it wants to grow.
