Terrapins have a numbers problem

With a week to go before practice starts, Maryland coach Mark Turgeon said he’s still waiting for Ukrainian center Alex Len to get through the NCAA clearinghouse. With just eight other scholarship players on the roster, along with — count ’em — six walk-ons for his first season with the Terrapins, Turgeon needs every body he can get. Senior guard Sean Mosley is one of just two players with at least two years’ experience in College Park.

Len signed in August. In September, the Terps had tryouts.

Now in October, despite the most daunting legacy to follow of any first-year coach this season — taking over for possible Hall of Famer Gary Williams — Turgeon exudes a quiet but noticeable chip on his shoulder. He spent Thursday promoting his first BB&T Classic, where his team likely will be an underdog against Notre Dame.

“Everyone’s telling us how bad we’re going to be,” said Turgeon, who won 97 games in four years at Texas A&M. “So I’m looking forward to coaching.”
