WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W. Va. — A Republican who suffered a concussion in Wednesday’s train derailment has been released from the hospital and is planning to attend the Republican retreat.
Rep. Jason Lewis, R-Minn., was admitted to the hospital after the train carrying Republicans to the retreat struck a dump truck that was stuck on the tracks. Lewis struck his head when the train hit the truck.
According to lawmakers, the train did not slow down before hitting the truck as it travelled outside of Charlottesville.
“Rep. Lewis is grateful for the care of the clinical staff at the UVA Medical Center in Charlottesville,” spokesperson Stephen Bradford said. “He’s been discharged and travelled onto the GOP retreat, where he is recovering from a concussion. He looks forward to participating in the retreat as much as he is able.”
A second passenger on the train, an aide to House Speaker Paul Ryan, was also taken to the hospital. Ryan’s spokesperson would not disclose the person’s name or health status.
