Redskins notes

From Redskins practice Wednesday:

…RB Clinton Portis met with doctors again today and was at Redskins Park. But coach Jim Zorn said he’s “very doubtful”. Zorn said Portis warmed up during an early practice and still had blurry vision. He did not attend the afternoon practice.

Zorn also said he’s being cautious with Portis.

“He would have to convince me,” Zorn said. “Everyone would have to convince me. I really believe this week, especially with it being so close to that concussion and with all the symptoms and him not practicing, that’s the key for me. I want to see him go for more than just one play.”

…DT Albert Haynesworth (ankle) did not practice. He still has some swelling on his left ankle.

“It’ll probably be a weekend decision,” Zorn said.

…Zorn was pleased with how Carlos Rogers responded in practice after being benched Sunday vs. Denver. Rogers worked with the starters, but there’s still been no decision made on who will open the game opposite DeAngelo Hall. But the way the coaches have raved about Rogers’ response, it would be more than surprising if it’s not him.

“He had his mind right on the practice,” Zorn said. “He didn’t skip a beat; he wasn’t pouting at all. He responded like a real professional.”

…Punter Hunter Smith was named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week after throwing for a touchdown pass on a fake field goal vs. Denver. He’s the first specialist in NFL history to rush and pass for a touchdown in the same season.

“The whole thing is just a real nice surprise,” Smith said. “I’m not sure what to do with it.”

Smith texted Colts QB Peyton Manning, a former teammate and told him, “You need to get your quarterback rating up where mine is.”
