Immigration Skills

In the original sketch for this cartoon, I had the congressman holding a rickety-looking contraption with bolts and screws flying out of it, widgets connecting here and there, and odd twirling motors and belts doing who knows what. It would have been interesting to draw, but I decided a jack-in-the-box would add a bit of action to an otherwise stiff-looking cartoon.

My whole bone with this immigration bill is that it doesn’t do enough about controlling our borders. I’m not all that bothered by the proposal to give amnesty to the illegal immigrants already in the country, as long as our immigration system is brought to a strong level of accountability.

One thing that bothers me about this whole issue is the xenophobia that seems to be creeping into the discussion. There are some people out there seemingly forgetting that immigration is not a bad thing as long as its regulated properly. They also seem to ignore the fact that their own ancestors likely were immigrants, too.
