A D.C. jail inmate charged in a wild shootout with District police was recaptured Thursday evening after escaping custody earlier in the day, authorities said.
At about 8:50 a.m., jail guards were taking 28-year-old Terrence Moore to Greater Southeast Community Hospital for medical treatment. At the hospital, he jumped from the vehicle and ran from the scene, jail officials said. D.C. police apprehended him without incident at around 7 p.m. near Wheeler Road and 10th Place, SE.
They are trying to determine how Moore was able to remove his restraints during transport.
After his escape, jail officials initially said Moore got into a burgundy Cadillac, which fled the scene. They later said Moore did not make his getaway in that car.
A corrections officer pursuing Moore on foot lost sight of him and soon saw the Cadillac leaving the area. But within hours, investigators determined that neither the vehicle nor its occupants had anything to do with Moore’s escape.
Moore was awaiting trial on charges of assault with intent to kill from an incident in March 2009 in Southeast Washington.
In that incident, members of the D.C. narcotics unit approached a group of people in a high-crime area when Moore separated from the group and took off running.
Officers were chasing Moore when he kicked in a locked door to enter a residence on the 3800 block of First Street SE, according to charging documents.
The officers followed Moore into a bedroom, and Moore yelled, “I got a gun!” Police said he shot several rounds from a .38-caliber semiautomatic at police, who were only three feet away. None of the officers was injured. Police returned fire, striking Moore four times. He retreated into a bedroom and locked the door.
Police evacuated the people living in the home, and called in members of the emergency response team, who told Moore to surrender peacefully.
But police said Moore told them, “I’m not going back to prison … no matter what.”
Moore surrendered an hour later and was taken to Howard University Hospital.
