Train hits track equipment near Wheaton

A Red Line Metro train was damaged Thursday when it struck equipment that was left on the track between the Wheaton and Glenmont stations. No injuries were reported.

The train headed toward Glenmont was damaged on its left side and the operator backed up to the Wheaton platform to let passengers off, according to spokeswoman Taryn McNeil.

Metro single-tracked trains for an hour after the accident and resumed normal service around 12:15 p.m., McNeil said. According to Metro’s e-mailed alerts, the Wheaton, Forest Glen and Glenmont stations were temporarily closed.

The equipment left on the tracks was related to work to replace the track in that area.

McNeil said officials did not know why the equipment was left behind but that they were looking into it. – Liz Farmer
