According to Al Jazeera, “Bashar al-Assad, the Syrian president, has accepted the resignation of the country’s government, following two weeks of anti-government protests that have gripped Syria.”
But as the report explains, cabinet members in the Syrian government have very little tangible power:
The government has little power in Syria, where power is concentrated in the hand of Assad, his family and the security apparatus. Otari has been prime minister since 2003. The 32-member cabinet will continue running the country’s affairs until the formation of a new government.

Assad is expected to address the nation later on Tuesday in a speech which may include a decision to abolish emergency laws.
Indeed, this seems to be a move aimed at quieting the protesters, who have been coming out in force around the country, and who have been violently quashed by the Syrian regime.
