David Axelrod not on board with ‘aggressive’ Biden team statement about escorting Trump out of White House

Former Obama adviser David Axelrod questioned the Biden campaign’s rhetoric regarding the possibility that President Trump refuses to leave the White House even if Joe Biden defeats him in the election.

Andrew Bates, a spokesman for the Biden campaign, said on Friday that they’re prepared to aid in Trump’s departure if the president doesn’t do so on his own, saying that “the United States government is perfectly capable of escorting trespassers out of the White House.”

Axelrod said on CNN that he believes it was a little soon for the harsh statement.

“I’m not sure I would’ve gone there,” he said. “It may be that people are feeling uneasy about the situation because of what the president is saying, but, you know, I don’t think … they need to be that aggressive at this point. They’re going to win this race. It seems pretty clear they’re going to win this race. And there is no question that Donald Trump, whether he likes it or not, is going to leave the White House.”

Biden has 264 electoral votes as of early Friday afternoon, according to the Associated Press, needing only six more to secure a path to the White House. Biden is leading in multiple states still counting ballots, including Nevada, Georgia, and Pennsylvania. He leads in Arizona, too, a state the Associated Press and Fox News have called for Biden while other outlets have held off.

The Associated Press shows 214 electoral votes for Trump, who is embarking on legal battles in multiple battleground states as he claims his opponents are trying to “steal” the election. His campaign has called for a recount in Wisconsin, which narrowly went for Biden, and a recount in Georgia appears imminent.
