A Los Angeles County coronavirus testing site confirmed its first local case of “flurona,” the flu combined with COVID-19.
At the 911 COVID Testing site, the child tested positive for both Influenza A and SARS-CoV-2, according to a report.
The child’s mother also tested positive for COVID-19 a day later, and officials said the pair had just come home from a family trip to Cabo San Lucas, the report noted.

COVID-19 and the flu are respiratory diseases caused by distinct viruses.
“Our new year’s resolution was to flatten the curve. And now, simply put, it’s now turned into a nightmare. The technicians are fatigued. Sometimes it feels like there’s no end in sight,” said Steve Farzam, chief operating officer of 911 COVID Testing.
At least 3,000 people are tested a day at Farzam’s Brentwood site, according to the report.
“Our resources have been so inundated with the vast amount of folks who are getting tested. We’re seeing folks who do have some basic cold symptoms, getting repeated tests, showing up almost every day of the week for a COVID test,” Farzam said. “If we can capture influenza-positive early on, then we could presumably prevent them from coming back every day, so we can save those tests for the people who really do need them.”
Roughly 30% of all individuals tested are positive for the coronavirus, according to Farzam. Last month that number was around 2%.
“The blizzard is in full effect, and we’re feeling it,” he said.
The number of hospitalizations due to COVID-19 has also surged in California. It reached the 2,000 mark in LA County hospitals, and the number in Orange County outgrew those of the summer surge, the report noted.
The delta and omicron variants continue to boost the number of cases worldwide.
