McCarthy to Trump: ‘Let Joe Biden talk’ during next debate

House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy suggested President Trump should refrain from interrupting Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden during the next debate because it would help illustrate Biden’s weakness as a candidate.

“My best advice is let Joe Biden talk,” the California Republican and staunch Trump ally told reporters who asked about the president’s debate performance.

Trump’s performance during Tuesday’s debate in Cleveland, Ohio, has been widely criticized in part because he constantly interrupted Biden, the former vice president and 36-year Delaware senator. Biden also interrupted Trump but not as often.

McCarthy said he believes Trump won the first debate but that the event could have been “more productive.”

The Commission on Presidential Debates announced it would make changes ahead of the second debate, which is scheduled to take place in Miami on Oct. 15. The changes could include allowing the debate moderator to cut off candidates’ microphones.

McCarthy said Trump should just remain quiet when Biden starts talking.

“Biden is the Democratic Party, and his ideas are far long gone,” McCarthy said. “I think the more he talks, the more the American public would decide they don’t want Joe Biden.”
