College student fakes hate crime for attention

A 20-year-old Beloit College student has been arrested for faking a hate crime just to get a little attention from the student body.

Michael Kee was arrested February 1st on charges of obstruction and disorderly conduct. Additionally, he was charged for criminal damage for spray painting anti-Muslim slogans, #MuslimBan, and a swastika on the wall next to his dorm room, according to a statement by the Beloit Police.

He confessed that he only did it out of jealousy after another student who had been a victim of anti-Semitism received attention.

The Beloit police chief was especially critical of Kee because he said that fake hate crimes delegitimized real ones.

“The false report by Kee may only serve to delegitimize other victims of these types of egregious offenses. However, we believe it is important for our community to know that Kee’s incident does not diminish our resolve going forward with these reported incidents and any other reported crimes of this nature,” David B. Zibolski said in the statement.

Kee is far from alone, there have been dozens of fake hate crimes reported since Donald Trump was elected President, especially regarding the Muslim community.
