OSWEGO, N.Y. (AP) — The U.S. Geological Survey is launching the newest addition to its fleet of large research vessels on Lake Ontario.
A traditional commissioning ceremony is being held Wednesday morning at the Lake Ontario Event and Conference Center in Oswego. Suzette Kimball, acting director of the U.S. Geological Survey, will Christen the vessel.
The 70-foot-long ship will enable Lake Ontario Biological Station scientists to explore fish health and water quality in Lake Ontario. The research is used by federal, state and Canadian provincial resource managers to protect and restore the lake’s ecosystem and the New York sport fishery that generates $54 million annually.
Vessel construction was funded by an $8.2 million award from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.
