President Trump said on Saturday that a decision on who would replace fired FBI Director James Comey could come within a week.
“We can make a fast decision,” Trump said, speaking of the selection process to reporters as he was bound for Liberty University in Virginia on Air Force One.
When asked whether the decision or an announcement could happen before he leaves for Saudi Arabia on Friday, he responded: “Even that is possible.”
Four candidates are reportedly being considered by the Justice Department: Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas; former U.S. Attorney in Manhattan and New York state judge, Michael Garcia; and former Justice Department Criminal Division Chief Alice Fisher.
“I think the process is going to go quickly,” he said on Saturday. “Almost all of them are very well known. They’ve been vetted over their lifetime, essentially. But very well known, highly respected, really talented people. And that’s what we want for the FBI.”
On Saturday, Trump described the candidates as “outstanding people,” “very well known”, and “highest level.”
Once picked, the nominee will need to be confirmed by the Senate.
