HEARNE, Texas (AP) — Central Texas officials say a man who was critically injured by hundreds of bee stings is recovering.

Hospital officials said Wednesday that 56-year-old Clark Rudy of Hearne has been upgraded to fair condition. Hearne police say he was attacked over a 10 minute period Tuesday morning while mowing the lawn near a storage facility. Firefighters were able to get the bees away by hosing Rudy down with soap and water.

Sgt. Stephen Yohner tells KBTX-TV that the area around the facility will remain roped off until the weekend so no one else gets stung.

A Texas A&M University researcher tells the station that Africanized honey bees were likely responsible for the attack because they can be aggressive.
