Is Vincent Gray a bricklayer?

Good thing for D.C. Council Chairman Vincent Gray that he knows public service better than he knows pull-up jumpers.

At Ward 2 Councilman Jack Evans’ re-election campaign kickoff event this weekend, the chairman was the talk of the afternoon for his basketball abilities — or lack thereof.

About 300 Evans supporters, including Gray, Mayor Adrian Fenty and Ward 5 Councilman Harry Thomas, had come to the barbecue-themed event at the Kennedy playground in the Shaw neighborhood.

The event was winding down when a few kids started shooting hoops on the playground’s court. Gray first took to rebounding for them, and then started shooting a few of his own … and missing … and missing some more.

“He keeps missing layups,” said one source on the scene. “Then he backs up and starts really shooting. It was absolutely horrid.”

Soon, the chairman had attracted a crowd of about 40 spectators, who took in the spectacle for several minutes. And countless more clangs.

We hear Gray was clad in slacks and dress shoes, so maybe those limited his hoops. Another source says they were shooting on a rim that looked a bit bent. “The rim might explain the misses, but it doesn’t explain the air balls,” he said.

But hold on, hecklers: Gray’s spokeswoman, Doxie McCoy, tells us that our sources are not giving an accurate representation of his skills. She said, “he had not played basketball in a while but it came back quickly.”

She added that he defeated Mike DeBonis of the Washington City Paper in a game of H-O-R-S-E, in which he “made 50 percent or more of his shots.”

DeBonis tells us it actually became a game of P-I-G “out of sheer exasperation on both sides, but yes, the chairman won, P-I to P-I-G. We were both bricking ’em up — both of us missed layups.”
