Politicians: Condensed

If you think that politicians talk too much, then we’ve got just the Web site for anyone looking to boil down political speeches to just the nuts and bolts.

The Sunlight Foundation recently started Capitol Words (capitolwords.org), which scans the Congressional Record to bring you the most frequently used word during that day’s congressional proceedings.

We counted them for the first six months of 2008 and — surprise, surprise — politicians are just like a broken record: They tend to use the same words … a lot.

Words like “health” (most popular word on 10 separate days), “energy” (nine days), “oil” (six days), “housing” (six days), “intelligence” (five days), “tax” (fivedays), “budget” (four days) and “service” (four days).

No, it doesn’t count words like “the” and “a,” congressional procedural words or other “stop words” such as “about” and “further” — or, perhaps most telling, “me.”
