Trump overtakes Clinton in RCP average

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s lead over Donald Trump in RealClearPolitics’ average of national polls has evaporated.

Since becoming the presumptive GOP nominee, Trump’s poll numbers have improved and the two are now effectively tied nationally, according to RCP’s average. Trump’s 0.2-percentage-point advantage comes as he has bested Clinton in three of the five polls included in the average.

Clinton’s struggles to put away her Democratic primary opponent, socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders have not helped her poll numbers either. While some of Trump’s critics are uniting behind Trump’s candidacy, Sanders’ supporters may not yet be willing to join Clinton.

Whether Trump’s 0.2-percentage-point lead lasts is yet to be determined, as he’s led only four of 28 polls conducted on March 1 or later that are tracked by RCP.

Trump’s critics have been quick to note that other failed presidential candidates have led in May of an election year, only to crumble in the fall.
