Winning becoming a Haas tradition

This week at the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm, the defending champion in the Constellation Energy Senior Players Championship is Jay Haas. If that name sounds like its been in the news lately, you’re right.

Last weekend his son, Bill Haas, won the PGA Tour’s Viking Classic in Madison, Miss. It was the second title this season in the emerging career of the 28-year-old, who also won the Bob Hope Classic in January.

Winning golf tournaments is routine stuff in the life of Jay Haas. He has nine PGA Tour titles and 14 since joining the Champions Tour. He called last year’s win in the Senior Players — where he shot 64 in the final round to overtake Tom Watson by one stroke — the highlight of his career.

But it couldn’t compare to watching his son birdie the 18th hole in the final round to win the Hope, a tournament Jay had won 22 years earlier. When his oldest son, Jay, Jr., handed him a phone to speak to his wife, Haas was speechless.

“No words came out,” Haas said. “I was crying like a baby.”

At age 56, Haas says his days on the Champions Tour are numbered. Since capturing the Senior Players, he hasn’t won. He still can experience the thrill of victory, however.

“My round last year in the Constellation Energy Senior Players was the highlight for me personally,” Jay Haas said. “But in my lifetime, watching [Bill’s victory] was probably the best thing that’s ever happened.”
