A stenographer collapsed in the well of the U.S. Senate Monday afternoon, prompting a brief, unplanned recess.

The stenographer, a woman, appeared to faint as Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., concluded his opening floor remarks.

McConnell exclaimed, “Oh my goodness.”

A few seconds later, the Senate ajourned for a brief recess. It gaveled back into session a few minutes later.

According to Senate officials, the woman is receiving medical care.

Stenographers stand in the well of the Senate, in close proximity to the lawmaker who is speaking, and record every word spoken during the session.
